Today was another day inside the Leadership Center with ice breakers and presentations. Afterwards we had free time early and I enjoyed using that time playing soccer inside the conference room with others. However shortly after we started playing we had to move outside. As the rain stopped we moved outside in search of a flat space to continue playing. Well, we didn’t find a flat space but rather a small patch of grass on a downward hill in front. There I found this beautiful flower on the ground that reminded me of my childhood and my mom.
It was like a sensation I never experienced as I picked up the flower and observed all the dew drops and simple colors that made it so elegant. It gave me flashbacks of imagining the exact flower while drawing pictures and showing my mom. I always tried to draw that exact flower because it reminded me of how my mom made me happy through her simple little acts. Like how she hung every single one of my pictures I drew on the wall, or knew exactly how to take care of me when I was sick.
And then that made me think of a participant of the program who wasn’t feeling too well. So I went up to her room and gave the flower to her because I thought if she had a little bit of my mom it would help her feel better. My mom always knew what to do with me so I thought my little memento would do the same for her somehow. But it was honestly shocking to experience something from a flower.

The students started July 4 acknowledging that it was American Independence Day by listening to a rendition of America the Beautiful. The curriculum this day, because of its significance to one group of them, was focused on the concept of Independence and the dates and events which each student considered to be significant milestones in the journey to make the lives of people and particularly those in their community better. With 1776 as a start (but earlier dates acceptable) the students were each asked to put down at least two such events/dates which would meet the criteria of changing people’s lives for the better.
The day finished with the students in three different circles reflecting on their highs and lows with regards to the matters discussed during the day .
1) Not everyone thinks the same and we should accommodate one another
2) Someone’s opinions matters and there is no right or wrong
3) Everyone here must have empathy
4) This is a good space to explore personality
5) Everyone must feel free to interact with others and get out of their comfort zone
6) This is a safe space to sharing and expressing your views
